Dhaka: President of Switzerland Alain Berset will visit Kutupalong Rohingya camp in Cox’s Bazar on Tuesday to see the plight of Rohingya people who took shelter there following persecution in Myanmar’s Rakhine state since August last year.

A Swiss embassy statement earlier said Berset’s four-day official visit is aimed to express solidarity with Bangladesh which is severely affected by the ongoing crisis in neighbouring Myanmar.

According to his programme schedule, the Swiss President will leave Dhaka for Cox’s Bazar at 9 am by a Swiss Federal Council Jet and is expected to reach there at 9:40am.

He will visit the Kutupalong camp from 11:30am to 1:50pm and talk with Rohingya people to hear the stories of violence perpetrated on them by the Myanmar army.

Later, President Berset will also talk to local press at Kutupalong camp and visit Cox’s Bazar sadar hospital.

He will leave Cox’s Bazar for Dhaka at 3:15pm and meet civil society representatives in the capital.

The visiting Swiss President arrived in the capital on Monday afternoon when President M Abdul Hamid received him at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport.

Besides, President Berset paid homage to the martyred freedom fighters and Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman by placing wreaths at Savar National Mausoleum and Bangabandhu Museum in city’s Dhanmondi area respectively this morning.

He also held official talks with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and had a tete-a-tete at Prime Minister’s Office and joined a high level segment of Bangladesh-Swiss Business Roundtable here.

The visiting Swiss President will meet President Abdul Hamid at Bangabhaban this evening.

He will leave Dhaka on Wednesday afternoon wrapping his four-day official visit.
