Dhaka: Five members of a family were burnt in a fire that originated from an electric short circuit at Maniknagar in capital’s Mugda area in the early hours of Thursday.

The injured were taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital’s Burn Unit. The injured are Shifor Ali, in his fifties, a fish trader, his daughter Tanjila, in her twenties, sons— Al-Amin, around 19 years old, and Murad, 12 years old, and their relative, Rony, believed to be 19.

Emon, a man who recovered the victims and took them to the hospital, said Shifor Ali used to live at the second floor of a building at Maniknagar’s Comillapotti. Shifor and his family members received burn injuries as electric short-circuit on a room’s ceiling fan caused fire at their residence at about 12:30am.

Fire service and civil defence headquarters official Russel Sikder said the fan fall from the ceiling on the bed, where the victims were sleeping, and left them injured.

The Mugda police Officer-in-charge (OC) Enamul Haque said it is believed that the victims were injured due to electric short-circuit.
