President and PM mourn death of Jhantu

Dhaka: President Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Sunday expressed deep shock at the death of Sharfuddin Ahmed Jhantu, former mayor of Rangpur City Corporation.
In a condolence message, the President, who is now undergoing treatment in Singapore, prayed for eternal peace of the departed soul and conveyed profound sympathy to the bereaved family members, President’s press secretary Md Joynal Abedin told UNB over phone from Singapore in the afternoon.
In a condolence message, the Prime Minister recalled with profound respect the contributions of Jhantu to the development of Rangpur city.
‘His death is an irreparable loss to Rangpur as well as the country,’ she said.
Former mayor of Rangpur City Corporation Sharfuddin Ahmed Jhantu died at a hospital in the capital on Sunday afternoon, reports the UNB.
Jhantu, who was shifted to Dhaka from Rangpur on February 1 after he suffered a stroke, breathed his last around 3:30am at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU), said hospital sources.
Jhantu, also an advisor of Rangpur Awami League, was elected the first mayor of the Rangpur City Corporation on December 20, 2012.
