Cox’s Bazar: Blaming Myanmar’s de facto leader Aung San Suu Kyi for genocide and atrocities in Rakhine, Nobel Peace Laureate Tawakkol Karman on Monday called upon the fellow Nobel laureate, Suu Kyi, to immediately resign from her position.

‘The international community should be more active in helping the oppressed Rohingya people... the United Nations should take necessary steps,’ Tawakkol Karman said.

Three female Nobel Peace laureates—Iran’s Shirin Ebadi, Yemen’s Tawakkol Karman and Northern Ireland’s Mairead Maguire - visited the Rohingya camps in Kutupalong and Balukhali and talked to female refugees.

‘The Myanmar army is carrying out brutal torture on Rohingyas. These are cruel things like ‘genocide’ and ‘ethnic cleansing’. Even children cannot escape their persecutions. If necessary, they’ll have to be tried in the international court,’ said Mairead Maguire.

Before talking to Rohingya women, the visiting female Nobel Peace laureates exchanged views with officials concerned, including the Kutupalong Camp in-charge.

Among others, deputy secretary of Expatriate Welfare and Overseas Employment Ministry Mohammad Shaheen, Rohingya Refugees and Repatriation Commissioner Mohammad Mizanur Rahman Siddiqui were present.
