DU suspends 12 BCL men

Dhaka: Dhaka University (DU) authorities on Tuesday expelled a student and suspended 11 others for different terms on different charges.
The decision was taken at a meeting of the Syndicate held at night, said DU Vice-chancellor Prof Dr Mohammad Akhtaruzaaman.
Earlier on Monday, the disciplinary committee of Dhaka University suggested taking action against them.
Md Omar Faruk, a second-year Marketing student and assistant secretary of BCL’s Salimullah Hall unit, was expelled and six others were suspended over assaulting Ehsan Rafiq, a second-year student of Disaster Science and Management department residing in Salimullah Muslim Hall.
Samiul Islam Sami of Sociology department, also BCL member of the hall unit, Ruhul Amin of Mass Communication and Journalism department, also assistant secretary of BCL hall unit, Mehedi Hasan Himel of Urdu department, also sub-training secretary of BCL hall unit, Fardin Ahmed of Public Administration department, also assistant secretary of the hall committee, and Ahsan Ullah of Philosophy were suspended for two years each. All of them were second-year students of the respective departments.
BCL Salimullah Hall committee vice-president Ariful Islam, also a fourth-year student of the Institute of Education and Research, was suspended for one year.
Meanwhile, five students of Pali and Buddhist Studies department were suspended for two years each for harassing their classmates and hurling abuse towards them. All are second year students of the department.
The action was taken against Ashikur Rahman, Hazrat Ali, Mortakin Al Mamun Piyal, Md Jahirul Islam and Rahad Ahmed.
On the night of February 6, Ehsan Rafiq was beaten badly allegedly by some BCL activists at DU Salimullah Muslim Hall just for demanding back his calculator lent to one of them.
Ehsan is now suffering from poor eyesight in his right eye.
Earlier on February 8, BCL suspended Salimullah Muslim Hall unit Deputy Secretary Mehedi Hasan Himel and assistant secretaries Omar Faruk and Ruhul Amin for their involvement in the incident.
