US to share Islamic State information with Bangladesh

Dhaka: The United States wants to share information about Islamic State (IS) with the Bangladesh government, says the country’s ambassador in Dhaka.
In a meeting with the Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan the US ambassador to Bangladesh Marcia Stephens Bloom Bernicat expressed her government’s plan to share information on IS and the militant organisation’s possible ‘threat’ in Bangladesh, said the minister while talking to the journalists after the meeting, which was held at the Secretariat on Tuesday.
The US ambassador was quoted by the minister as saying that the US has information about ‘IS activities and threats in Bangladesh’, and an envoy from the country would visit Bangladesh to hand the home minister over the information.
Bernicat had also been said to have praised Bangladesh’s success in combatting terrorism and militancy.
Asked about whether IS is active in Bangladesh Asaduzzaman said, ‘In today’s meeting the US ambassador didn’t give any specific information about IS operation in the country,’ adding, however, that Bernicat had talked about the threat that Bangladesh, like many other countries, might face from the militant group.
Following his meeting with the US ambassador, the home minister also had a meeting with the newly-appointed British High Commissioner to Bangladesh Alison Blake.
