Home Minister tells Parliament
Currently jails have 66,465 prisoners

Dhaka: Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan on Tuesday informed the Parliament that the country's prisons at this moment have 69,774 detainees against the capacity of 34,796 detainees.
The minister said this in the House while replying to a query of treasury bench member Symoom Sorwar Kamol during the question and answer session. Speaker Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury chaired the House proceedings.
He said the jails across the country were accommodating 69,774 prisoners till January 24, 2016 and capacity of the prisons should be increased to 80,000 detainees.
Asaduzzaman said the government has plans to reform the jail code and modernize jails across the country so that those can be turned into correction centers.
