Noted writer Professor Dr Muhammad Zafar Iqbal was stabbed by miscreants at Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST) campus in Sylhet on Saturday afternoon.

Jalalabad Police Station Sub-inspector Faruque Hossain confirmed the matter to NTV Online.

Witnesses said a young man swooped on Dr Zafar Iqbal, a teacher of SUST Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) department, around 5:40pm while he was sitting on the stage of a celebration programme, ‘Robo-5,’ of the Electrical and Electronic Engineering (EEE) department at the Mukta Mancha.

The attacker stabbed him on the back of his head, leaving him injured.

The writer was taken to Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital where he reportedly needs A+ blood for surgery.

A constable, Ibrahim, was also injured while trying to catch the attacker.

However, SUST students caught the attacker from the Shikkha Bhaban after the attack. However, the identity of the attacker could not be ascertained yet.

Meanwhile, additional police have been deployed on the campus.
