PEN Bangladesh condemns attack on Zafar Iqbal
PEN Bangladesh has condemned the attack on Dr Zafar Iqbal that took place on Saturday.
Zafar Iqbal, the teacher of Shahjalal University of Science and Technology, is a courageous fighter for freedom of expression and human rights and a hugely popular writer.
PEN notes with relief that Zafar Iqbal is now out of danger, said a press release on Sunday.
‘We feel happy that the injuries of Zafar Iqbal are not life threatening and he would be back soon doing what he likes to do best—teaching and writing about dangers of extremism, injustice, denial of rights and a host of other issues that we confront on a daily basis. We are also worried that this wouldn’t be the last attempt on his life and that there may be more. We request the government to provide him adequate security so that he can lead his life without having to worry about his safety,’ said the press release.
PEN Bangladesh restates its categorical support for freedom of expression and stands by Zafar Iqbal as he fights extremist thoughts with logic and reasoning.
PEN Bangladesh believes that opinions and ideas can only be countered by opinions and ideas, and not by stifling thought.
