Attack on UK envoy: HC verdict February 11
Dhaka: The High Court on Wednesday fixed February 11 for delivering the verdict on the petitions against a lower court verdict that had sentenced three people to death in a case filed over the attack on former British High Commissioner to Bangladesh Anwar Choudhury.
An HC bench comprising justice Enayetur Rahim and Justice Amir Hossain fixed the date after hearing on the death reference and the petitions of the condemned convicts, said a UNB report.
Attorney General Mahbub-e-Alam represented the state while lawyer AKM Fayez stood for the petitioners.
Then British High Commissioner Anwar Choudhury came under grenade attack on May 21, 2004 at the shrine of Hazrat Shahjalal (RA) after the Jum’a prayers. Three people were killed in the attack, while 17 others, including Choudhury, suffered injuries in it.
Two cases—one for murder and another for explosive substances—were filed in connection with the grenade attack.
The second case filed (for murder) in connection with the same incident, the Divisional Speedy Trial Tribunal of Sylhet on December 23, 2008 awarded death sentence to Huji’s Mufti Abdul Hannan, Sharif
Shahedul Alam Bipul and Delwar Hossain Ripon. Mufti Muhibur Rahman (Mufti Hannan’s brother) and Mufti Mainuddin were awarded life term and fined Tk 10,000 each.
