Police inspector killed in 'gunfight' during Mirpur raid
Dhaka: An inspector of Detective Branch (DB) police was killed in a reported gunfight during a raid at a residence in Pirerbagh area of Mirpur on Monday night.
The deceased police official is Jalal Uddin, inspector of DB’s west division.
Police said tipped off a team of DB police cordoned off a three-storey building at Moddho Pirerbagh at about 10:30pm on Monday. The DB police was informed that a gang of criminals is gathering firearms at the spot.
Sensing the presence of law enforcers, the reported criminals, staying at the building, opened fire to them. Police also fired back, which triggered a gunfight between them and left Jalal Uddin injured with bullet on his head.
Later, the inspector was taken to Square Hospital, where he breathed his last undergoing treatment at about 2:00am.
However, the criminals fled away through the backside of the building.
Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner Asaduzzaman Miah visited the spot around 1:00am.
While talking to journalists, Asaduzzaman Mia said sensing the presence of police the criminals opened fire to them from the roof top of the three-storey building. Police also fired back and DB inspector received bullet on his head. Later, his fellow officials recovered him from the spot and took him to Square Hospital.
Jalal Uddin died undergoing treatment at the hospital. Police Commissioner said the law enforcers are trying to detain the persons involved behind the incident. He said police held some people including a woman from the house for interrogation.
