Savar: Awami League general secretary Obaidul Quader on Saturday alleged that BNP is resorting to lies over Khaleda’s illness to confuse people.

‘Dhaka’s civil surgeon has already visited Khaleda Zia in jail and said she’s doing fine… BNP is spreading lies over her sickness,’ he said.

Quader, also the Road Transport and Bridges Minister, came up with the remarks while talking to reporters after seeing the development work on Abdullahpur-Ashulia-Baipail road in Savar.

The minister said a medical team will be formed to examine Khaleda’s heath condition and ensure proper treatment for her.

‘If the medical team thinks her treatment is possible in the country, she’ll be given treatment here (Bangladesh). She’ll be sent abroad for the treatment if the team suggests in case of any serious disease,’ he added.

On Friday, BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir voiced concern over Khaleda Zia’s sudden illness in jail and demanded the government immediately release her for her better treatment either at home or abroad.

Earlier on Thursday, Fakhrul’s a scheduled meeting with Khaleda in jail was postponed as the party said jail authorities informed the BNP chief’s personal secretary Abdus Sattar that she fell sick.

On February 8 last, a special court here sentenced Khaleda to five years’ rigorous imprisonment in the Zia Orphanage Trust graft case.

Quader said the government is ensuring treatment with due honour for Khaleda considering that she is the chief of a party and a former Prime Minister.

The AL leader also turned down BNP’s allegation that the government is trying to hold another stage-managed election, saying their party never wants to hold an election of ‘blueprint’. ‘It’s BNP which tries to hold such polls when it remains power.’

He assured all of taking proper steps so that traffic tailbacks are not created on Tangail-Chandra and Baipail-Abdullahpur highways during the upcoming Eid-ul-Fitr.
