Govt, ACC out to keep BNP away from election: Moudud

Dhaka: BNP senior leader Moudud Ahmed on Tuesday alleged that the government and its ‘agent’ Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) are working with an identical goal to keep BNP out of the next general election.

‘The Anti-Corruption Commission is working as a government agent and their goal is the same. Both are trying to keep BNP away from the election race,’ he said.

Speaking at a discussion, the BNP leader further said, ‘I would like to tell them that BNP will join the next polls, no matter what plots and repressive measures you resort to.’

National People’s Party (NPP), one of the components of the BNP-led 20-party alliance, arranged the programme at the Jatiya Press Club demanding Khaleda Zia’s release from jail.

About media reports on ACC’s move to launch an investigation into an allegation of dubious bank transactions by eight BNP senior leaders, Moudud said it is a baseless allegation brought against their colleagues for their character assassination.

‘They (ACC) did it as part of their plot to weaken BNP,’ he observed.

After sending their party chief Khaleda Zia to jail, the BNP leader said the government is now trying to implicate top BNP leaders in ‘false’ cases to create a ground so that the party cannot join the election.

He warned that the country’s people will foil all the plots of the government.

Moudud said their party, during its rule, established the ACC to catch the real corrupt. ‘But, the ACC has now turned into a subservient institution of the government and its only responsibility is now to fulfill the government desires,’ he said.

The BNP leader said the government will not be able to weaken BNP and harm the unity of its leaders by its ‘evil’ efforts.
