Dhaka: Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) in a drive on Saturday evicted around 150 temporary and permanent unpermitted establishments at Shahbagh in the city.

Chief Estate Officer of DSCC Khaled Ahmed along with executive magistrate Mamunur Rashid launched the drive at about 1:00 pm which continued till 4:40 pm, reported UNB.

Additional police were deployed in the area to avert any untoward incident during the drive.

During the drive, around 150 illegal shops and different parts of the flower market which were extended illegally were demolished from in front of Shishu Park and its nearby area, said Khaled Ahmed.

Besides, two food shops- ‘Ovijat Snacks’ and ‘Apu Snacks’ -inside the Shishu Park were fined of Tk 5,000 and Tk 3,000 respectively for selling food items at higher rate as well as to occupy space illegally in front of the two shops, he said.

Although the authorities are said to be continuing with such eviction drives in future too, it could not be known whether there would be any government step to rehabilitate or compensate the owners of the shops that were demolished during the drive.
