Dhaka: BNP senior leader Gayeshwar Chandra Roy, who was released from jail just two days back, on Thursday said it is high time for their party to launch an oust-government movement to free its chairperson Khaleda Zia from jail.

‘I think the government won’t allow Khaleda Zia to walk out of jail as it has already established its control over the court. The government has kept her in jail on political consideration. So, we should free her through political means,’ he said while talking to reporters at BNP’s Nayapaltan central office.

The BNP leader said their party should not carry out political programmes only seeking Khaleda’s release. ‘Time has now come for us to ensure the fall of the government.’

Gayeshwar, BNP standing committee member, said not only the BNP chairperson, but also the country’s people will be freed if the government’s fall can be ensured.

He said the government cannot dare hold a credible election even after tremendous repression and suppression on BNP as it knows people are with the party.

‘Many people may think BNP is on the brink of ruination in the face of widespread repressive acts. But BNP can’t be eliminated. The more the level of repression will get increased the more democratic forces will be united and stronger,’ Gayeshwar observed.

He said he used to feel good during his stay in jail thinking that their party remains united in the absence of their chairperson Khaleda Zia. ‘Our unity is a sign of our success in the days to come.’

Gayeshwar was released on bail from Keraniganj Central Jail on Tuesday, over two months after he had been arrested.

On January 30 last, detectives arrested Gayeshwar from near Police Plaza Concord Shopping Mall in the city’s Gulshan area ahead of the lower court’s verdict delivered on February 8 in a graft case against Khaleda.
