Dhaka: Awami League has picked Talukder Abdul Khaleque and Advocate Zahangir Alam as the party candidates to contest elections to Khulna and Gazipur city corporations respectively billed for May 15.

The decision was taken a meeting of the Awami League Local Government Election Nomination Board held on Sunday.

AL President and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina presided over the meeting held at her official residence Ganobhaban.

After the meeting, AL General Secretary Obaidul Quader briefed reporters about the outcome of the meeting.

‘After reviewing everything, we’ve decided to nominate them (Khaledque and Zahangir) for the city corporation polls,’ he said.

On March 31, Chief Election Commissioner KM Nurul Huda announced the election schedule for Khulna and Gazipur city corporations.

According to the election schedules, the deadline for the submission of nomination papers is April 12, while the dates for scrutinising those are April 15 and 16, and the last date for withdrawal of candidature is April 23.
