Dhaka: Bangladesh General Students’ Rights Protection Council on Wednesday announced to halt their movement until Thursday morning and disclose their decision over it in a press conference in the morning.

At around 6:30pm the Students’ Rights Protection Council’s convener Hasan Al Mamun said the Prime Minister’s announcement of abolishing quota was not properly clear to them, reports the UNB.

They would discuss and decide the next course of their movement and then hold a press conference at Dhaka University Library around 10:00am on Thursday, he said.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Wednesday evening announced that there will be no quota system in government jobs from now during the question-answer session in Parliament facing the strong protests by jobseekers and university students across the country against the quota system.

After the convener’s declaration, the protesting students were seen leaving the campus while the crowd was thinning gradually, witnesses said.

Meanwhile, in the morning, several hundred students of DU thronged in front of the Central Library and staged demonstration as part of their scheduled programme.

They also boycotted their classes and examinations.

Besides, the students of private universities including University of Asia Pacific, Daffodil International University were staging demonstration in different areas of the city including Mirpur, Farmgate, Sukrabad, and Dhanmondi.

Earlier on Tuesday, the students’ platform announced to go on with the agitation programme until a specific statement from the prime minister to this end is made.

Rashed Khan, joint convener of the platform, came up with the announcement at the foot of Raju Sculpture on the Dhaka University campus around 5:55pm on Tuesday.

He vowed to continue the movement at all universities and colleges across the country from 10:00am to 7:00pm every day until their demand is met.
