Dhaka: UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon phoned Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Sunday and offered Bangladesh to be member of a UN high-level panel to be formed on water which she has readily accepted, reports UNB.

Sheikh Hasina accepted the proposal of UN Secretary General for becoming a member of a UN High-level Panel on Water.

PM’s Press Secretary Ihsanul Karim, ‘Ban Ki-moon phoned Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina at about 8:00pm and said the United Nations is going to constitute a high-level panel on water.’

After exchanging greetings, he said, the UN Secretary General made the proposal for Bangladesh to become a member of the panel to the Prime Minister which she has accepted.

Moon also said a conference of the UN Police will be held at the UN Headquarters in New York in June this year and urged Hasina to send a high-level Bangladesh delegation to the conference.

The Prime Minister also told the UN Secretary General that a conference titled ‘Global Forum on Migration and Development’ is going to be organised in Dhaka in December this year and invited Ban Ki-moon to attend it.

About the current political situation in Bangladesh, Sheikh Hasina informed the UN Secretary General the situation in Bangladesh is stable and all political parties are participating in local government polls at union council level.

‘The political parties are currently busy with election works,’ she said.

Sheikh Hasina mentioned that earlier municipality elections were held with the participation of all political parties.

On development of Bangladesh, she said, ‘The country’s development activities are going on.’

Later, the UN Secretary General and the Prime Minister concluded the telephone conversations by extending thanks to each other again, the press secretary said.
