DB to investigate tea vendor’s death
Dhaka: The case filed in connection with the death of Mirpur tea vendor Babul Mattabbar has been transferred to Detective Branch (DB) of Police on Monday.
Victim’s eldest daughter Rokhsana filed the case with Shah Ali Police station against seven people, including ‘drug peddler’ Parul and police informant Delwar, in connection with the death of her father on 4 February.
Though some policemen were involved in the incident, Rokhsana had to file the case excluding the names of involved cops allegedly under police pressure.
Dhaka Metropolitan Police deputy commissioner (media) Md Maruf Hossain Sarder told United News of Bangladesh that the case was transferred to detectives under the Dhaka Metropolitan Police on Monday.
Inspector Rezaul Islam of the DB (West Division) has been made Investigation Officer (IO) of the case, he said.
The 45-year-old Mattabbar succumbed to his burn injuries at Dhaka Medical College Hospital on 4 February after struggling for life for hours with almost 95 percent burn injuries in his body.
Earlier, Babul caught fire from his kerosene stove as it was hit by police in the city’s Gudaraghat area of Mirpur on 3 February.
Though Shah Ali Police recorded the case excluding the names of the involved cops, the single member inquiry panel, formed by DMP on 4 February to investigate the incident, found four policemen— sub-inspectors Mominur Rahman and Niazuddin Mollah, assistant sub-inspector Devendra Nath and constable Jasimuddin— guilty.
The committee headed by Deputy Commissioner (Discipline) of the DMP, Tutul Chakrabarti, also found the then officer-in-charge of Shah Ali Police Station Shahin Mollah guilty of negligence of duty in connection with the incident.
The probe panel submitted its report to DMP Commission Md Asaduzzaman Mia on Saturday noon.
OC Shahin Mollah was withdrawn from Shah Ali Police Station on Friday while the accused four policemen were suspended on 4 February along with another police officer.
