Munshiganj: An accused drug dealer was killed in a reported gunfight between his cohorts and police at Katakhali Haidrabad in the municipality area in Munshiganj early on Thursday.

The deceased is Saiful Islam alias Baba Arif, in his thirties, of sadar upazila, also an accused in 12 drug related cases.

Alamgir Hossain, officer-in-charge of Munshiganj Police Station, said Police arrested Arif along with 110 pieces of Yaba tablets from Durgabari village in Sadar upazila on Wednesday night.

Later, a team of police along with Arif conducted a drive in the area to recover arms around 2:30am.

Sensing the presence of the law enforcers, the criminals staying in the area opened fire to police, prompting them to retaliate that triggered a gunfight.

At one stage, Arif caught in the line of fire and died on the spot.

Two policemen—assistant sub-inspectors Aslam and Kamal----were injured during the gunfight.

Police recovered a pistol, two bullets, one sharp weapon and an iron rod from the spot.
