Dhaka: Detectives arrested four young men from the city's Chankharpool area on Sunday afternoon over the attack on the residence of Dhaka University Vice-Chancellor during angry protests against the existing quota system in public service.

The arrestees are M Rakibul Hasan alias Rakib, 26, M Masud Alam alias Masud, 25, M Ali Hossain Sheikh alias Ali, 28, and Abu Sayeed Fazle Rabbi alias Siam, 20.

A team of Detective Branch of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP, South) arrested them around 1pm, said DMP Deputy Commissioner (Media) Masudur Rahman.

Two mobile phone sets stolen during the attack were also recovered from their possession, he said, adding that no one of them is the student of Dhaka University.

In the early hours April 9 last, a group of protesters demanding reforms in the quota system in public service broke the main entrance of the VC's residence and ransacked several rooms and furniture. They also set fire to two vehicles parked inside the VC residence.

A case was filed with Shahbagh Police Station on April 10 over the incident.
