Chuadanga: A suspected ringleader of a robber gang was killed in a reported gunfight with police at Gobindahuda village in Damurhuda upazila on early Thursday.

The deceased was identified as Mirajul Islam Mia, 47, son of Hafez Mandal of Hatibhanga village in the upazila, reports the UNB.

Ahsan Habib, assistant superintendent of Chuadanga Police, said Mira was a member of a notorious robber gang ‘Jamu-Akram Bahini’ and wanted in nine cases including that of robbery.

A team of police arrested Mira along with two bullets on Wednesday afternoon.

Later, police along with Mira conducted a drive in the area to recover arms, police said.

At one stage, the associates of Mira opened fire and hurled bombs to police in a bid to snatch away him from police custody, prompting them to retaliate that triggered a gunfight.

Mira caught in the line of fire and died on the spot while the others managed to flee the scene, police said.

The law enforcers also recovered one shutter gun, two crude bombs and some sharp weapons from the spot.
