Dhaka: BNP senior leader Nazrul Islam Khan on Thursday said though the Election Commission (EC) looks sincere in holding a fair election, their party has doubt whether it will be able to keep police and administration under its control.

‘We’re there in the polls and will remain so. The Election Commission wants to hold a good election. But we have question about its capability. People are in doubt whether it’ll be able to keep police and administration under its control,’ he said.

The BNP leader came up with the comments while talking to reporters after a meeting with Chief Election Commissioner KM Nurul Huda at the latter’s office.

Nazrul, a BNP standing committee member, along with his two party colleagues Netai Roy Chowdhury and Mahbubuddin Khokon met the CEC ahead of the Khulna city polls billed for Tuesday.

He said their party’s main demand is to hold a credible and peaceful election in Khulna.

The BNP leader said they informed the CEC that their party leaders and activists have got seriously worried as law enforcers continued arresting and intimidating them.

He demanded the Commission take steps for releasing their party’s arrested leaders and activists alongside intensifying its monitoring to prevent fresh arrest of the BNP leaders and activists. ‘The raids on the houses of our candidates’ agents must be stopped.’

Nazrul also demanded the EC withdraw three police officers, including the Khulna Police Commissioner, for the sake of a fair balloting.
