Dhaka: BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Friday urged Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to look at the Malaysian national election as it has manifested that public opinion cannot be resisted by an undemocratic and corrupt government.

‘I call upon the illegal Prime Minister to look at Malaysia to know that public opinion cannot be resisted even by applying all the strength when a regime indulges in corruption, obliterates democracy and gets isolated from people,’ he said, reports the UNB.

Speaking at a discussion-cum-photo show at the party’s Nayapaltan central office, the BNP leader also said Malaysian election is the latest example where public opinion reflected braving all the obstacles.

Nationalist Research Centre arranged the programme marking the 34th anniversary of Khaleda Zia’s taking of BNP’s leadership.

Dr Mahathir Mohamad was sworn in as the Prime Minister of Malaysia on Thursday after the Pakatan Harapan coalition defeated ruling Barisan Nasional one led by immediate past Prime Minister Najib Razak who got embroiled in a massive corruption scandal.

Recalling their Chairperson Khaleda Zia’s role in different democratic movements and the country’s politics, Fakhrul said the government has kept her in jail ‘unfairly’.

‘There’s no instance of staying the High Court’s bail by the Supreme Court in such cases. The government is plotting to keep her in jail to hold another lopsided election,’ he added.

The BNP secretary general called upon people from all walks of life and the political parties to forge a national unity to ‘restore’ people’s rule and democracy by defeating the current ‘monstrous and corrupt’ regime.

Fakhrul alleged that the government is staging a drama over the city corporation election to avoid its defeat.

He said police are regularly arresting their party leaders and activists, including the probable agents of their party’s mayoral candidate in Khulna city corporation polls.

The BNP leader said police now have turned into an opponent of BNP as they are trying to influence the election in favour of Awami League.
