Dhaka: President Abdul Hamid on Saturday said the launching of Bangabandhu Satellite-1 has taken the nation to a new height.

‘Bangladesh entered the new era through the launching of Bangabandhu Satellite-1. It has taken us to a new height as a nation. It’s a matter of joy and pride for us,’ he said in a message issued on the occasion of the satellite launching, reports the UNB.

Congratulating the people of the country on the auspicious occasion, President Hamid said, ‘With the launching, a glorious chapter in Bangladesh history has started. This is a very jubilant and proud day for the nation. From this day, Bangladesh will be a proud member of the Satellite Club.’

The present government has been making all-out efforts to build Digital Bangladesh by taking into accounts the challenges of the 21st century, the President said adding that introduction to satellite as well as cable services is very important for ensuring easy access to the Internet and satellite launching is also essential for building Digital Bangladesh.

‘I believe the launching of satellite-1 will bring revolutionary changes in the field of broadcast and telecommunications. Now we’ll be able to achieve self-sufficiency in these sectors and give up dependence on foreign satellites,’ Hamid added.

The President thanked all who played the direct and indirect role in building of the satellite and its launching project.

Hamid also watched the launching of the country’s first satellite as BTV broadcast it live.
