Dhaka: The Appellate Division will hear on May 17 a petition filed by Bangladesh Road Transport Corporation (BTRC), seeking a stay on a High Court order directing the state-owned organisation to provide half of Tk 1 crore as compensation to the family of deceased Titumir College student Rajib Hasan.

Chamber judge of the Appellate Division Justice Hasan Foez Siddique fixed the date after a hearing on the petition.

The full-bench Appellate Division, led by Chief Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain, will hear the petition.

Earlier, on Thursday, BRTC filed the petition with the Appellate Division seeking a stay on the compensation slapped by the HC on it.

Rajib Hossain, who lost his right hand after it got stuck between two buses at Bangla Motor in the city on April 3, succumbed to his injuries at Dhaka Medical College Hospital on April 17.

On May 8, the HC bench of Justice Salma Masud Chowdhury and Justice AKM Zahirul Hoque issued an order to provide Tk 1 crore as compensation to the family of Rajib Hasan.

The High Court had directed owners of ‘Sajan Paribahan’ to pay Tk 50 lakh and BTRC the rest.

The court had also directed ‘Sajan Paribahan’ and BRTC to pay half of their amounts within this month and submit a report to the court on June 25, clearing that the compensation was paid or not.

BRTC only sought stay on the compensation of Tk 50 lakh which it was directed to pay by the High Court, said BRTC lawyer Muniruzzaman.

On April 4, the court issued a rule asking the authorities concerned to explain as to why directives should not be given to provide Tk 1 crore as compensation to Rajib Hasan.
