Dhaka: A court in Dhaka on Wednesday granted bail to two accused on surrender in the murder case filed in connection with the collapse of Rana Plaza, the country’s worst industrial disaster.

Dhaka Senior Judicial Magistrate Shahzadi Fahmida granted bail to two factory inspectors—Engineer Yusuf Ali and Engineer Shahidul Islam—when they surrendered before the court today.

Both of them remained fugitive for long to avoid their arrests in the case over the collapse that had killed more than 1100 workers in 2013.

Sheikh Baharul Islam, lawyers of the two accused, sought bail for them before the court.

Earlier, on February 8, a court sent Rajuk building inspector Awlad Hossain to jail after rejecting his bail petition in the case.

On December 21, 2015 the court accepted the chargesheet in the murder case and issued arrest warrants against 24 people.

The collapse of Rana Plaza led to the death of at least 1,135 people, mostly garment workers, and injured 2,515 on April 24, 2013. The building, which housed five garment factories, was built on a swamp and some of its upper floors were illegally added.

On June 1, 2015, over two years after the Rana Plaza tragedy, the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of police pressed charges against 42 people, including Rana Plaza owner Sohel Rana, in two cases.

Of the charge-sheeted accused, 17 were common in the two chargesheets submitted by the CID.

Rana’s father Abdul Khalek and mother Marjina Begum and 12 government officials were among the charge-sheeted accused.

In total 594 people have been witnesses in the killing case while 135 in another case.

Rajuk on that day filed a case with Savar Model Police Station against Rana for violating the Bangladesh National Building Code.

Police also filed a murder case accusing six people, including Rana, on April 25, 2013.

Police arrested Rana on April 28, 2013.
