At least 150 incidents of stone throwing at running trains take place each year on average, causing  Tk 1.45 crore loss to Bangladesh Railway, said Mofazzal Hossain, secretary to the Railways Ministry.

The railways secretary came up with the information while talking to reporters at a meeting at the Rail Bhaban organised for raising awareness about stone throwing at running trains on Thursday, reports the UNB.

Glasses of 2000 doors and windows of trains were damaged while 14 people got injured last year due to stone throwing, he said.

The stone throwing incidents at running trains mostly occur in 15 districts of the country. Of these, 70 incidents of stone throwing reported from 29 spots in western region while 80 incidents reported from 36 spots in eastern region last year, he added.

The Railways Ministry has sent separate letters to UNOs and OCs concerned of those districts through the Inspector General of Police for taking measures to prevent the incidents.

The Ministry also sent letters to the Cabinet Division for informing the deputy commissioners concerned for holding meeting and it also sent letter to Islamic Foundation for Imams to play a role through religious speech for raising awareness about such incidents among people, said Mofazzal.

Besides, the superintendents of police of those districts have been asked to take necessary steps regarding the problem through the Home Ministry.
