Kushtia: Two people were killed in a reported gunfight with Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) at Shastipur in Sadar upazila in Kushtia early on Thursday.

The deceased are Akauddin Hiya, aged around 45, resident of the village of Mrittikapara, and Liakat Ali, believed to be in his 40.

RAB officials said the deceased were members of banned extremist organisation Gonomuktifouz.

RAB also recovered two foreign pistol, one riffle, one shooter gun, and two bullets.

RAB 12 Kushtia camp commanding officer Major Mosaddek Ibn Mujib said acting on a tip-off, RAB officials conducted a drive at the village of Shastipur near Kushtia-Jhinaidah road at about 3:30am, while the extremists were in a secret meet.

Sensing the RAB men’s presence, the extremist opened fire on them. As the RAB members retaliated, a ‘gunfight’ ensued, which left two of the extremist dead on the spot, said Major Mosaddek Ibn Mujib.

The RAB official said the deceased were wanted in several cases including murder. The bodies were sent to Kushtia Sadar Hospital morgue for autopsy.
