Make sure none enjoys impunity for atrocities on Rohingyas: BD

Bangladesh has called upon the United Nations to make sure that no one enjoys impunity despite full violation of international laws related to humanitarian and human rights issues while treating Rohingyas.

Bangladesh has also said it needs to be made sure that no one gets impunity for crimes against Rohingyas due to ‘absence of visible and effective steps’ of the UN Security Council, reports the UNB.

Permanent Representative of the Bangladesh Mission to the United Nations Masud Bin Momen made the call while delivering speech at an open debate on ‘Upholding International Law within the Context of the Maintenance of International Peace and Security’ held in New York recently.

Describing the horrible humanitarian crisis seen by the UN Security Council team in Bangladesh and Myanmar recently, Ambassador Momen urged all to make full utilization of the international laws in finding a sustainable solution to Rohingya crisis.

He hoped that the UNSC will consider the strong humanitarian appeal made by the forcibly displaced Rohingyas seeking justice and accountability, said the Bangladesh Mission on Saturday.

Bangladesh currently has a Rohingya population, which is far more than Bhutan’s entire population. Bangladesh is now hosting some 1.2 million Rohingyas.

Ambassadors and representatives of over 75 countries including 15 UNSC member states spoke at the debate chaired by UNSC President for the month of May.

The speakers termed the international laws as heart of the United Nations and said there is no alternative to use these laws in maintaining international peace and security.

Chef de Cabinet Maria Luiza Viotti spoke at the debate on behalf of UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres.

Luiza Viotti said the Security Council has played a critical role in upholding international law, supporting the peaceful settlement of disputes and advancing the fight against impunity.

‘Against a backdrop of grave threats and growing turmoil in many regions, the unity of this body and the serious commitment of the entire international community will be crucial in preventing human suffering and defending our common humanity. The Secretariat stands ready to support these efforts,’ said Chef de Cabinet.
