Dhaka: Thirteen industrial units will receive ‘President’s Award for Industrial Development 2016’ in six categories for their contribution to the economy on Tuesday.

President Abdul Hamid will distribute the awards to the winners at a ceremony for the ‘President’s Award for Industrial Development’ at Osmani Memorial Auditorium in Dhaka.

A senior official of Commerce Ministry told UNB that the awards will be given under six categories this year instead of five, with the inclusion of the ‘micro-industry’ category, which has been included in the list for the first time.

With that, the six industrial categories to be recognized will be large, medium, small, micro, cottage, and hi-tech.

Fariha Spinning Mills from Narayanganj will receive the first position award in the large industry category, while Spectra Engineers Limited and Envoy Textile Limited will be awarded for the second and third positions respectively in this category.

BRB Polymer Limited, Chittagong Denim Mills Limited, Basumati Distribution Limited will be awarded the first, second and third prizes respectively in the medium-sized industry category.

In the small industry category, the winners are Runner Automobiles from Mymensingh, Oco-Tex Limited from Gazipur and Abul Industries, in that order.

Alongside, Smart Leather Products will be the lone company recognized in the new micro-industry category.

Super Star Electrical Accessories Limited from Narayanganj and Service Engine Limited from Dhaka will be awarded under the hi-tech category, and lastly, Karupanno Weaving Factory will be the lone awardee in the cottage industry category.

The awards will be based on guidelines framed in 2013 by the ministry to encourage entrepreneurs to set up industries and infuse innovation and creativity and encourage overall contribution of firms to the industrial sector.

The guideline says tax, loan and bill defaulters will not be eligible for recognition while the industrial entrepreneurs who are guilty of criminal offences in court or have any pending case will be disqualified.

According to Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics’ Survey of Manufacturing Industries 2012, Bangladesh has 42,792 industrial establishments, 41 per cent of which are micro-type manufacturing units, 37 per cent small, 14 per cent medium and 8 per cent large.
