Drives coming to end harassment in SIM re-registration

Dhaka: The Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) will conduct mobile drives to end harassment and anomalies in the ongoing mobile SIM re-registration process, said State Minister for Posts and Telecommunications Tarana Halim on Saturday.
‘BTRC has formed mobile teams yesterday (Wednesday). We gave directives today and a letter will be sent to the BRTC that there’ll be a two-member committee ... and the mobile teams will submit their full reports to the committee,’ she said.
The junior minister made the disclosure while launching a website of Telecom Reporters' Network, Bangladesh (TRNB) at Conference Room of Posts and Telecommunications Division at the Secretariat.
‘The mobile drives will also be carried out in various divisions, districts and upazilas apart from capital Dhaka,’ Tarana said.
She said the BTRC chairman has been asked to examine whether there is any punitive provision in the BTRC policy if the mobile teams find any anomaly in the SIM re-registration process.
‘If there’s any such punitive provision, he (BTRC chairman) has been asked to penalise the operator concerned for negligence by the mobile teams,’ she said.
Tarana said she received a number of complaints through her verified Facebook page that mobile operators have negligence to some extent and some retailers take money from clients during the mobile SIM re-registration process.
Posts and Telecommunications Secretary Md Faizur Rahman Chowdhury said the BTRC formed three mobile teams in this regard.
TRNB President Rashed Mehedi and its general secretary Shamim Ahmed also spoke on the occasion.
