Cumilla: A suspected robber was killed in a reported gunfight between his cohorts and police at Chhechrapukuria in Debidwar upazila on early Saturday.

The deceased was identified as Sumon of Kuruin village and ‘member of inter-district robber gang’, reports the UNB.

Tipped off that a gang of robbers was preparing to commit robberies, a team of police conducted a drive around 1:15am, said Mizanur Rahman, officer-in-charge of Debidwar Police Station.

Sensing presence of the law enforcers, the gang members fired gunshots on the police forcing them to fire back in self-defence, leaving Sumon dead on the spot, said the OC adding that Sumon was wanted in 15 cases.

Police recovered a pipe gun along with a cartridge and other sharp weapons from the spot.
