Dhaka: Two members of a family and three of their relatives -- all females -- suffered burn injuries in a fire that broke out from a motorcycle parked near their ground floor main door in the city’s Pallabi area on Friday.

Shamima, 43, her sister-in-law (husband’s sister) Amena Begum, 46, and their relatives -- Swapna, 20, Raina, 19, and Ridhita, 16, -- were sent to the burn unit of Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH).

Sources at the DMCH police camp said the motorcycle was kept beneath the staircase of a five-storey building on the ground floor where Shamima’s family resides.

The motorbike suddenly caught fire around 8:30pm.

Panicked, the family members and their relatives tried to get out of the house through the flame and got injured. It is not still clear what caused the fire.
