Dhaka: Just two days before the balloting, BNP on Sunday demanded the Election Commission withdraw the Gazipur Superintendent of Police (SP) for ensuring a fair and impartial voting in the city corporation there on Tuesday.

‘We demanded that Gazipur SP Gazipur Harun-ur-Rashid be pulled out,’ BNP leader Dr Abdul Moyeen Khan told reporters after a meeting with Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) KM Nurul Huda at Nirbachan Bhaban, reports the UNB.

During the meeting, a three-member BNP delegation, led by Moyeen Khan, also submitted to the CEC a letter of the party containing its various demands and observations for holding the election in a fair and acceptable manner.

Moyeen Khan said the Gazipur SP is one of the main barriers to holding a credible election as he is playing a ‘partisan role and harassing BNP leaders and activists’.

He warned the government that the next general election will be affected if the Gazipur election is not held in a fair and neutral manner.

The BNP leader said they urged the Commission to exert its constitutional power as an independent body so that voters can cast their votes without any fear and obstacle. ‘It’s EC’s responsibility to protect people’s voting rights.’

He said they also urged the Commission to take step to stop harassment of BNP leaders and supports by police.
