AL candidate Jahangir takes early lead in GCC polls

Gazipur: Awami League mayoral candidate Jahangir Alam has taken lead in the early counting of votes in the Gazipur City Corporation (GCC) election on Tuesday.
According to unofficial results of four polling centres, Jahangir bagged 2,504 votes while BNP mayoral contestant Hasan Uddin Sarker polled 1,071.
The four polling centres are Rani Bilashmoni Govt High School, Deuliabari Primary Govt School, Konabari College and Khartoil Adarsha School.
Earlier, voting in the GCC election was held amid BNP’s various allegations of irregularities and vote fraud at many polling stations.
However, the ruling party and its mayoral candidate claimed that the balloting was largely fair and BNP brought the allegations to make the polls controversial.
The voting was suspended in seven polling centres, including Khartoil Mansur Ali Adarsha School, West Joydebpur Madinatul Ulum Madrasah, Bhogra Government Primary School and DaffodilKindergarten-2, due to violence and capturing of polling stations and giving fake votes, said Dr Dewan Mohammad Humayun Kabir, deputy commissioner of Gazipur.
The polling that began at 8am ended at 4pm without any break at 425 polling stations, and the counting of votes began after that.
