US stands proudly with Bangladesh over Rohingyas: Bernicat

Dhaka: The United States has reaffirmed its commitment to help Rohingyas and ensure justice for the victims in line with its policy of protection and accountability.
‘The United States stands proudly with Bangladesh to support the policy of protection and accountability,’ US Ambassador in Dhaka Marcia Bernicat told diplomatic correspondents at DCAB Talk in the Jatiya Press Club on Thursday, reports the UNB.
She said they are working with their allies and partners, including Bangladesh, to help ensure that there will be justice for the victims and those responsible for these heinous atrocities and other human rights violations will face the consequences.
Bernicat appreciated Bangladesh’s generosity, humanity, the warm and strong sense of history of its people saying Bangladesh saved the lives of 700,000 Rohingyas who fled ethnic cleansing in Rakhine State of Myanmar.
She appreciated Bangladesh’s engagement with Myanmar to ensure the voluntary return of Rohingyas to Myanmar in a ‘safe and dignified’ manner.
Bernicat said the US was one of the first nations to respond to the crisis originating from Rakhine.
On Tuesday, the US said they strongly support the actions taken by Canada and European Union partners to continue the promotion of accountability for the atrocities in Myanmar.
‘We strongly support these actions,’ said State Department Spokesperson Heather Nauert in a press statement.
The Department of State is working closely with their allies and partners to promote accountability for those responsible for the ethnic cleansing in Rakhine, and for serious human rights abuses against members of other minority groups, including in Kachin and Shan States, said the spokesperson.
Responding to a question on anti-drug drives, Ambassador Bernicat laid emphasis on catching ‘kingpins’ and destroying the network of illegal drug traders.
She also talked about training and learning from each other to avoid a situation of shootout and to do things in a right way.
