Dhaka: BNP senior leader Khandaker Mahbub Hossain on Friday said their party is gradually losing confidence in the judiciary as the way courts are passing orders in its chairperson Khaleda Zia’s different cases.

‘It’s contrary to an independent judiciary, the way the Supreme Court and lower courts are passing orders in Khaleda Zia’s cases. That’s why our confidence in the judiciary is gradually waning,’ he said, reports the UNB.

Mahbub, a BNP vice chairman, came up with the remarks while speaking at a discussion organised by Nagorik Odhikar Andolon at Dhaka Reporters’ Unity (DRU).

He thinks there is no possibility to have Khaleda released soon form jail through the legal battle as judges now cannot work independently since the removal of former Chief Justice SK Sinha by force.

The BNP leader said a strong movement on the streets is crucial to ensure the BNP chief’s release.

He also said a national unity has to be forged to restore democracy and people’s rights.

‘I believe the national leaders of Bangladesh will respond to BNP’s call for forging a national unity. The government won’t be able to stay in power if the national unity is formed,’ Mahbub said.

He also urged the politicians to take lesson from Malaysian and get inspired for removing an autocratic and corrupt government and establishing people’s voting rights through united efforts.

The BNP leader alleged that the government has been torturing Khaleda both mentally and physically by keeping her in an abandoned jail. ‘The government is trying to push her towards death gradually. The nationalist force must take to the streets to foil the government’s such plots.’
