Four suspected criminal were killed in gunfights with law enforcers in Jhenidah, Mymensingh and Gaibandha districts early Sunday.

In Jhenidah, two suspected drug traders—Sajjadur Rahman and Abdur Razzak—were killed in a reported gunfight with members of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) at Pobhati in the district town early Sunday.

Senior Superintendent of police Golam Morshed, company commander of Rab-6, said that on secret information, a team of elite force raided a house in the area around 2 am.

Sensing presence of the RAB members, the drug traders opened fire on the law enforcers, forcing them to fire back in self-defence, triggering the gunfight.

After the gunfight, they recovered the bullet-hit bodies from the spot.

Two RAB members were also injured in the gunfight.

They recovered two one-shooter guns, 55 bottles of Phensidyl and 152 pieces of Yaba tablet from the spot.

In Mymensingh, Faruk Miah, 31, a suspected drug trader, was killed in a reported gunfight with police in Atharbari area of Ishwarganj Upazila around 2:15am.

On information that a gang of drug traders gathered in the area over sharing drug money, a team of police conducted the drive, said Ahmed Kabir, officer-in-charge Ishwarganj Police Station.

Sensing presence of the police, the drug traders hurled brick chips and opened fire on them.

The law enforcers fired back in self-defence, triggering the gunfight, leaving Faruk injured with bullet.

Later, the injured was rushed to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital where doctors declared him dead.

Besides, in their anti-drug drives, police arrested 59 people from the district.

With the latest deaths, at least 127 people were killed in ‘gunfights’ with members of law enforcement agencies while 37 bodies of suspected drug traders were recovered after reported gun battles between rival groups during the countrywide anti-narcotic drives since15 May.

In Gaibandha, A suspected robber was killed in a reported gunfight with police at Sakoa in Palashbari upazila early Sunday.

The deceased is Shamsul Haque, a resident of Satarpara area.

Police arrested Shamsul on Saturday afternoon, said Mohammad Shahriar, officer-in-charge (OC) of Gaibandha Sadar police station.

Later, police conducted a drive along with Shamsul around 2am.

When the team reached the area, his cohorts attacked police and opened fire on them, forcing them to fire back in self-defence, triggering the gunfight.

The gunfight left Shamdul injured with bullets.

Later, the injured was taken to Sadar Hospital where doctors declared him dead.

Six policemen were also injured in the gunfight, the OC said.
