In separate incidents, a schoolgirl has been raped allegedly by an intern at a hospital and a minor girl by an imam in Sylhet, and a newlywed housewife gang-raped in Kushtia.

In Sylhet, an intern of Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital was arrested on Monday allegedly for raping a schoolgirl at the hospital.

The arrestee is Makkam Ahmed Mahi, an intern at the ENT department of the hospital and son of Mokhlesur Rahman of Muktagachha upazila in Mymensingh district.

Officer-in-charge of Kotwali Police Station Golam Sadek Kawsar Dastagir said they arrested Mahi at noon while the victim was admitted to the One-stop Crisis Centre (OCC) of the hospital.

He said the girl was with her sick grandmother at the hospital. Around 3am on Monday, she went to the doctor’s room to get the prescription understand. However, Mahi who was on duty at that time raped the girl.

As the girl narrated the incident to her parents in the morning, they lodged a complaint with hospital director Brigadier General AKM Mahbubul Haq.

Later, the hospital authorities handed Mahi to police.

The hospital director said they will form a probe committee to look into the incident.

Besides, police arrested a mosque imam from Hazarik village in Jakiganj upazila on Sunday night for rapping an eight-year-old girl.

The arrestee is Hafiz Hasan, 25, son of Kutub Ali of Daulatpur village in the upazila. He was the imam of Hazarichak Paschim Jam-e-Mosque.

Habibur Rahman, officer-in-charge of Jakiganj Police Station, said Hafiz tactfully took the girl to his room on the veranda of the mosque on Sunday and raped her there.

Later, he fed the victim with sleeping pills and dumped her beneath his bed. The victim was rescued in an unconscious condition in the evening.

In Kushtia, a newlywed housewife was reportedly gang-raped for three days after being abducted from Ramanathpur village in Khoksa upazila.

Victim’s uncle alleged that local mason Dobir Sheikh, son of Habibur Rahman of the village, had long been harassing the victim after his proposal to marry her was rejected by the family. The family instead married her to a youth of nearby village recently.

Dabir and his associates abducted the housewife on Saturday morning while she was coming to visit her father’s house.

They took her to an undisclosed location and raped her keeping her confined there, the uncle alleged.

The alleged rapists abandoned the victim at his house on Monday morning, he said.

Talukdar Asaduzzaman, officer-in-charge of Khoksa Police Station, said he went to visit the victim at Kushtia General Hospital but she was to speak.
