Sylhet: Just two days before the balloting, Jatiya Party on Saturday extended its support for Awami League mayoral candidate Badar Uddin Ahmed Kamran in Sylhet city polls.

The party came up with the announcement at a press conference at a city hotel, reports the UNB.

Sylhet’s episode came last in the series as the opposition party in parliament extended its support for the ruling party mayoral candidates in all three city polls in Rajshahi, Barishal and Sylhet billed for Monday next.

In a written speech, Jatiya Party presidium member ATU Taj Rahman said their party’s Sylhet city and district units gave the support for Kamran at the directives of party Chairman HM Ershad.

He said their party took the decision for the sake of development of the city and for presenting the people a clean Sylhet city.

Taj also said their party leaders and activists will carry out electioneering today in favour of the ruling party candidate at 27 wards of the city.

AL central leader Misbahuddin Siraj, Jatiya Party leader Yahya Chowdhury MP and Sylhet unit AL leader Shafiqur Rahman, among others, spoke at the programme.

Earlier on Wednesday, Jatiya Party extended its support for AL mayoral candidate in Barishal, Serniabat Sadiq Abdullah, dropping its mayoral runner from the race.

On July 9, Jatiya Party mayoral candidate Washiur Rahman Dolon withdrew his nomination in Rajshahi, extending his support for the AL aspirant AHM Khairuzzaman Liton.
