Pabna: A young housewife was strangulated to death allegedly by her husband and in-laws over dowry at Hariabari village in Sadar upazila early Tuesday.

The deceased was identified as Shampa Khatun, 25, wife of Jahid Hossain of the village, reported UNB.

Daughter of Nurul Islam of Kodalia village in the upazila, Shampa was married off to Jahid five years back, said victim’s paternal grandfather Alauddin Sardar.

Since the marriage, Jahid and his family members used to torture her for dowry, he said.

At one stage of altercation over the issue in the early hours of Tuesday, they beat her and subsequently strangled her.

On information, police recovered the body in the morning and sent it to Pabna Medical College Hospital for autopsy.

Officer-in-charge of Sadar Police Station Abdullah Al Hasan said Nurul Islam filed a case against five people, including Jahid and his parents, in this connection.

Meanwhile, all the family members went into hiding after the incident.
