Financial Express Editor Moazzem Hossain passes away
Dhaka: AHM Moazzem Hossain, Editor of The Financial Express, died at a city hospital on Wednesday. He was 73.
Hossain who had been undergoing treatment at Square Hospitals for several days with lung complications breathed his last at 6:45 pm, family sources said.
He is survived by wife, one son, one daughter and a host of relatives, friends and well-wishers to mourn his death.
His first namaz-e-janaza will be held at his residence at Ramna Tower, 125 Boro Moghbazar at 10am on Thursday while the second one at The Financial Express office at 11am and the third one on the National Press Club premises at 12 noon on the day.
The veteran journalist will be buried at Azimpur Graveyard after Zohr prayers, reports the UNB.
Hossain was the publisher of The Financial Express on behalf of the newspaper’s owning company—International Publications Limited (IPL). He was also the managing director of IPL.
He completed his graduation in 1967 and post-graduation in 1968 in Economics from Dhaka University.
After his post-graduation, Hossain worked with the Habib Bank Limited, Karachi, Pakistan as an officer in Training and Research Department and with the Ministry of Finance, Government of Pakistan, Islamabad, as a research official.
He started his career in journalism with the now-defunct Bangladesh Observer as a reporter.
The journalist also worked with The New Nation, United News of Bangladesh (UNB), Dhaka Courier and The Daily Star.
He was a member of the management board of the Press Institute of Bangladesh (PIB) from 1995 to 2001 and a member of the Board of Directors of the Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha (BSS) -- the national news agency—from 1997 to 2000.
Hossain was the president of Economic Reporters Forum at its launch in 1992.
He was a member of the Board of Directors of Janata Bank for two consecutive terms while a director of Securities Trading Company Limited, a subsidiary company of Investment Corporation of Bangladesh (ICB). He was also an independent director of Bay Leasing & Investment Ltd and Southeast Bank Limited.
Meanwhile, Finance Minister AMA Muhith expressed deep shock at the death of the veteran journalist.
In a condolence message, the minister prayed for salvation of the departed soul and extended sympathy to the bereaved family members.
The National Press Club, Economic Reporters Forum and Diplomatic Correspondents Association, Bangladesh (DCAB) also expressed deep shock at the demise of The Financial Express Editor.
