US lauds police role during attack on Ambassador’s vehicle
Dhaka: US Embassy in Dhaka on Sunday appreciated efforts taken by the Dhaka Metropolitan Police and security officials for their quick and professional response following the attack on a vehicle carrying the US Ambassador.
‘We express our appreciation to the Dhaka Metropolitan Police and security officials for their quick and professional response following the incident,’ the Embassy said in a statement, reports the UNB.
An official vehicle from the US Embassy in Dhaka, which was transporting Ambassador Marcia Bernicat, was attacked by a group of armed adult men, some on motorcycles, in the Mohammadpur area on Saturday, said the statement.
‘The Ambassador and her security team departed the area unharmed,’ reads the statement.
The Embassy said there were no injuries to the Ambassador, her drivers, or security staff; however, two security vehicles sustained some damage.
The vehicle carrying the outgoing US Ambassador came under attack as it left the residence of Badiul Alam Majumder, secretary of civil society advocacy group SHUJAN, on Saturday night.
The US Ambassador was attending a courtesy dinner at Dr Majumder’s house in the capital’s Iqbal Road in Mohammadpur area.
As she was leaving around 11:00pm, a group of miscreants gave a chase and threw bricks at the car she was in, Majumder told UNB.
‘As her car got away, the miscreants turned their attention to my house and hurled bricks at my house,’ Majumder added.
The Shujan secretary, however, said they were unable to identify any of the attackers, or tell if they had been waiting to attack the US envoy’s car, or happened to be just passing by.
Inspector (operations) Shariful Islam of Mohammadpur Thana confirmed UNB that they had heard of a house being attacked on Iqbal Road, and sent a team to investigate.
