Dhaka: The outgoing US Ambassador Marcia Bernicat has reiterated her country’s stance on Bangladesh political situation saying that the US Embassy has been doing its job as development partner of Bangladesh.

She said both the embassy and the ambassador are doing their jobs representing the US government.

She made the remarks on the sideline of a luncheon meeting of the American Chamber of Commerce in Bangladesh (AmCham) at Westin Hotel in the city on Monday, reports the UNB.

She, however, said there is a clear distinction that diplomat does not have the job to comment on political situation.

‘But the diplomats speak about urgent principles like freedom of speech, freedom of the press and holding of free fair and participatory inclusive election. These are the things for we are advocating for long’.

When her attention was drawn about the comments of Law Minister Anisul Haque blaming the US Embassy and eminent lawyer Kamal Hossain for acting against the government, she refrained from making any comment.

Bus she said everything which the US Embassy and she had done in couple of years were to be partner of the country.

‘I would ask all of you, look at everything that we have done as an embassy... as an individual in last couple of years, we have worked tirelessly as a partner of your country’, she said.

She said the US wants to see Bangladesh a strong, stable, democratic and prosperous country to make it the world’s better place.

She said, ‘Otherwise, we wouldn’t have aid programme, we wouldn’t have counter terrorism programme and we would not have cultural exchanges’.

‘So I would ask all of you to think about what we talk about to reach a conclusion’, she said.

Bernicat mentioned that both the US and Bangladesh have been heading towards election and democracy is a complex form of government where there is always some competing issues.

Speaking at luncheon programme, Bernicat urged the American companies to make their continuous efforts to take the bilateral trade to a higher level in the years to come.

Appreciating the US companies for bring their brand products with American value, ethics and corporate social responsibility and selling their good products at a good price with in a fear manner, she said these companies are representing the key American values.

‘You are conducting business in a fair and transparent manner. Those practices will take your business in a right way’, she said.

About business environment in Bangladesh she said Bangladesh needs do better job for selling itself as the country has been doing consistently six percent growth.

‘So your government has to sell it, your industries have to sell it, your civil society has to sell it,’ she said.
