Rohingya influx anniversary: Rights bodies call for justice

Update: 25 August, 2018, 19:10

Different rights bodies on Saturday formed a human chain and demanded that Myanmar junta must be brought to the International Criminal Court (ICC) for justice, otherwise ethnic cleansing and genocide like the one in Rwanda will recur in the history.

UN agencies and INGOs (International non-government organizations) must emphasize the justice rather than providing relief. Specially India, China and Russia must play an effective role in this regard, they said, reports the UNB.

CCNF (Cox’s Bazar CSO and NGO Forum) and COAST Trust organized the human chain programme in front of National Press Club, in the city marking the 1st anniversary of 25th August 2017 Rohingya influx in Bangladesh, said a press release.

Moderated by Mostafa Kamal Akhanda of COAST, the human chain programme was addressed, among others, by Badrul Alam and Zayed Iqbal Khan of Bangladesh Krishok Federation, Subol Sarkar of Bangladesh Bhumihin Samity, Barkat Ullah Maruf of COAST and Rezaul Karim Chowhdury of CCNF and COAST.

Barkat Ullah Maruf read out five-point demand that include publishing of relief accounts with transparency, and strengthening Bangladesh’s diplomatic effort and taking multilateral approach rather than the bilateral one in Rohingya repatriation.

In his speech, Badrul Alam said the Rohingya refugee issue is an imposed problem on Bangladesh.

Mostafa Kamal Akanda said that the global interest on Rohingya issues is fading away and one day Bangladesh will find itself all alone in taking the full responsibilities when the INGOs and UN agencies would be long gone. So, from now on, Bangladesh government should take full accounts of UN agencies and INGOs with full public transparency, he emphasized.

Rezaul Karim Chowdhury said Bangladesh is respectful to the human right and ‘Our Prime Minister opened the border for the Rohingya refugees. But it should not be considered as our weakness. We have billion-dollar business with India, China and Russia. They should leverage with sincere efforts to put pressure on Myanmar government to take back the Rohingyas with dignity,’ he said.
