Footage of Kushtia road accident jolts Bangladesh

Kushtia: A baby girl, who sustained injuries after falling down from her mother’s lap when a bus hit them in Kushtia district town on Tuesday, died at Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) early Thursday.
Deceased Afifa, one-year-old daughter of Harun-or-Rashid, succumbed to her injuries around 4:45 am, said her father.
The video footage of that accident has jolted Bangladesh when a private television channel of the country published it.
In this video, a public bus hit a woman from behind while she along with her baby girl was crossing the road.
Afifa fell from her mother’s lap when a bus of ‘Gandharaj Paribahan’ hit her mother Rina Akter from behind while crossing the road at Chourhash intersection in the district town on Tuesday, leaving them injured.
Later, they were taken to Kushtia General Hospital from where Afifa was referred to DMCH for better treatment, her father said.
The baby died due to head injury, said Dr Sohel Mahmud, chief of DMCH forensic department, who conducted the autopsy.
Later, the body was handed over to her family around 2:30 pm.
Afifa will be buried in the family graveyard in Kustia, said her father.
The video footage of the incident went viral on the social networking site Facebook, sparking an uproar among the locals.
Meanwhile, locals including students and journalists on Wednesday formed a human chain at Chourhash Intersection demanding exemplary punishment of the driver.
