Dhaka: Indian High Commissioner in Dhaka Harsh Vardhan Shringla on Wednesday said the next national election is an internal matter of Bangladesh and India will not make any comment on that.

‘That’s an internal matter of Bangladesh,’ he said adding that they maintain the position not to make any comment on that.

The High Commissioner was talking to reporters after his meeting with Foreign Secretary M Shahidul Haque at the latter’s office in the afternoon.

He termed the 4th Bimstec (Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation) Summit as a very ‘successful’ one which was held in Kathmandu on August 30-31.

The High Commissioner said Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and her Indian counterpart Narendra Modi consider Bimstec as a very important regional group which represents aspirations of a very large number of people in the region.

He noted that a number of important decisions were taken at the Summit attended by the member states from South and Southeast Asia for regional development and cooperation.

Shringla said the Bimstec leaders reiterated their commitment to take it forward and strengthen Bimstec significantly both financially, in terms of resources and in terms of commitment and in terms of the action points that have to be followed.

‘This is one of the main issues we discussed,’ said the Indian High Commissioner adding that they also discussed the upcoming meetings both in Dhaka and New Delhi.

Shringla said they spoke about some of the projects they are doing which are part of their development partnership.

One of the projects is transferring additional 500 megawatts of electricity, he said adding that there will be a number of events on connectivity and energy sector in the coming days.
