Lightning kills 4 in three districts

At least four people were killed in lightning strikes in separate places in three districts—Sunamganj, Satkhira and Bagerhat—on Wednesday.

In Sunamganj, Hridoy Das, 14, son of Lulu Das of Joynagar village in Chhatak upazila, died on the spot being hit by a thunderbolt while netting fish in ahaorin the village around 12:05 pm.

Another boy, Ranjan Das, was also injured in the incident, locals said.

In another incident, boatman Mamun Mia of Pirojpur district died on his boat when a thunderbolt struck him on the Shurma river, said Atiqur Rahman, officer-in-charge of Chhatak Police Station.

In Satkhira, a class-VIII girl was killed and three of her mates were injured as lightning struck them at Champaful area in Kaliganj upazila.

The deceased was identified as Bilkis Khatun, 14, daughter of Billal Khan of Saihati village in the same upazila.

Officer-in-charge of Kaliganj Police Station Hasan Hafizur Rahman said the four girls were hit by the thunderbolt around 4:30pm while attending private tuition class.

Later, she was taken to nearby Ashashuni Health Complex where duty doctor declared her dead.

In Bagerhat, a farmer named Bipul Haldar, 50, died as lightning struck him while he was working at his house’s cowshed at Rajapur village in Sharankhola upazila at noon.
