2 ‘kidnapped’ in Khagrachhari

Khagrachhari: Two officials of a construction firm were reportedly kidnapped by some miscreants from a remote area under Panchari upazila in Khagrachhari on 14 February (Sunday).
The incident came to light on Thursday as one of the victims, Saifuddin Shaheen Gazi, made a phone call to his wife seeking help for his release, reports UNB.
Sources said renovation work of a road from Panchari Bazar to Maratila is underway under the supervision of Ruhul Amin, 50, manger of contraction firm Al-Falah Trading Corporation and Saifuddin Shaheen Gazi, 35, assistant sub-contractor.
Nasir Mallik, owner of the construction firm, said some local miscreants had been demanding extortion from him since the beginning of the work. When Ruhul and Shaheen went to the spot for supervision the miscreants picked them up on 14 February.
Later, the kidnappers demanded Tk 50 lakh from him over phone as ransom for their release.
Sarbottom Chakma, chairman of Panchari upazila parishad, said they were trying to rescue the victims.
Abdul Jabbar, officer-in-charge of Panchhari Police Station, said no complaint has yet been lodged over the incident.
